Font & Side House Garden
This is a low maintenance garden design, with native and well adapted plants for bees and butterflies to create sweet spots for pollinators. We added a thin canopy palm tree for shade that allows a clear view of the garden from inside of the house and lets light in protecting the window area from the heat. The existent plants that we were able to save were trimmed and naturally treated and the smaller plants were relocated, incorporating them into the new design. The plan accounted for growth for all the plants included in the design and the correlation to each other, creating a healthy, full sustainable garden for the owner’s and fauna’s enjoyment. The first layer of the garden’s soil had to be removed due to rotten roots that brought pests to the garden. We added compost and organic matter to better the quality of the soil, and turned the soil to oxygenate the area before planting, setting the garden for success. In the next step we started with a layer of a natural fiber ground barrier with a thick mulch layer on top to avoid spraying with chemicals for weeds and added river rock spots for maximum drainage in the areas with waterlogging issues. This layering of materials allowed the water retention and drainage ratio to be well balanced and achieved a healthy environment for the garden to thrive. We included some pots and planters for succulents as they like to hang and spread, adding a punch of color and dimension to the garden. This also makes it easier to keep control of their well drained soil needs. As a final element, we added a thick edge to keep the garden safe and in place, making it easy to mow the grass and clean the concrete areas without damaging the plants. We were happy to turn around this garden for our client and make her “happy to come home every day” as she described. Solar spot lights were also included to enhance the garden at night with a serene and pleasant curve appeal.
